The Math Behind Obama’s Social Security “Cuts”

Washington is playing games with words and numbers in the debate over the Obama administration’s proposal to change the way annual cost of-living adjustments (COLA) in Social Security benefits are calculated—from the Labor Department’s widely-followed Consumer Price Index (CPI) to something called the Chained CPI. The issue has generated so much controversy, the president’s loyal supporters have become his most vociferous critics, accusing him of making seniors pay for the sins of government overspending, to the delight of Republicans.
